One guinea pig or two guinea pigs

Question
We are thinking about getting a guinea pig for the first time.  Are they happy if there's only one, or are they happier with a "friend"?  I'm not sure if we should purchase just a single one, or a pair.  I just don't want it to be unhappy or lonely.

They are happier in pairs, but it must be a same sex pair! you should look into a rescue or shelter, they are usually full of guinea pigs, and they are healthy! Several pet store piggies come pregnant or sick...
