Question
Just today our Guinnea pig (Moo Moo) Had 2 beautiful babies one looks like poppa and the other like mom. The only thing is taht I want to teach my children how to properly care for them and learn myself. Do I seperate momma and babies from Daddy or not and what else do I need to know? I Know nothing about Newborn Guinnea pigs. HELP!

Answer
Hello, you should certainly seperate mommy and daddy for five months or permenantly unless you want other litters. Guinea pigs should only have two litters in their whole life. Too many litters puts stress on the mom and you can sometimes lose the mom or the pups. As far as the newborn guinea pigs you can keep the female with the mom as long as they get along and it's best to seperate the male at 3-4 weeks of age so he won't start mating with his mom or sister. The best thing to do is to let mommy take care of the cavies and buy some alfalfa hay for the babies. The alfalfa hay will provide extra protein for the cavies and they can have alfalfa hay for up to a year and then switch them to timothy hay. You can handle them after two weeks and pet them under mommies watch. The best thing to do is to provide them with a clean cage and lots of hay and lots of love and care. As your cavies grow you will learn a lot and it's better than hearing it from me. They are born with fur and pretty big and are able to run and play at birth. You will hear squeaking and playing and the mom will be very gentle with her babies. :-) I'd buy some vitamin drops to put in her water for extra vitamins to help her replenish herself. :-) Good luck :)
