Question
Hi,Pat
I'm a New Guinea pig owner, I am getting my piggies soon but I would like to now how much veggies and pellets everyday.

Answer
Congratulations on your new pet. You will get many hours of enjoyment from him.

Guinea pig pellets should be the main dish. Don't buy the pellets with all the colored things in them. They have no nutritional value and are there only to look good to the owner. Buy the package with just green pellets and make sure the food bowl is full every day. Unlike rabbits we don't limit the amount of pellets they should eat.

As for the veggies don't go overboard. A chunk of carrot about an inch long is enough if you're going to give them daily. Parsley is the best choice for a side dish as it is very high in Vit C, much more so than even oranges.

Romaine lettuce is better for your pig than Iceberg. Iceberg is mainly just water and is fine if you're traveling and want to make sure your pig is drinking enough. About a half of a leaf of Romaine is enough for him to eat. Just remember that you want him to get pellets first, the veggies are secondary.

Mine love the rind of watermelon and cantaloupe. Some pigs like strawberries, others don't. They acquire their own tastes and you'll quickly learn what yours likes and dislikes.

To summarize, keep the food bowl filled with pellets everyday. If you aren't able to give veggies every day that's just fine. He won't mind.

Best of luck to you and your baby. If you're able to send pictures I always love to see them.
