Sudden blindness

Question
Please help - my 5 month female guinea pig has suddenly gone blind.  The vet is baffled.  The guinea pig does share a hutch at night with a lionhead rabbit and they appear to get on well - does anyone have any experience of this happening?  I desperately need help.  She is feeding and drinking by a syringe at the moment and has a healthy appetite in this way but has today spent all day just snuggled up in a hay nest (apart from when I am cuddling or feeding her).

Answer
Hi Jamie

Sorry for the delay in my reply, I have been ill all weekend :(

Are you sure your pig is blind? The reason I ask is that when a pig gets a hurt eye(s) the face of it goes all white to protect it as it heals.

If that isnt the problem I have to admit that I have never heard of a pig just going blind, especially one so young.

I have found out that cataracts can occur in young piggies on rare occasions.

Sorry I cant help more.

Andy

P.s If there is anything else you think is relevant to tell me, please write back. I have eliminated a problem with the rabbit sharing the guinea pig's hutch as an injury would be evident rather than a problem in both eyes. However, on a separate point, guinea pigs should not be kept with rabbits.
