Question
Is a himilayan (and something else) be likely to pass on any bad genetics when bred with her brother (cinnamon with one white rossette on his forehead)? How many index finger widths would a 6-8 inch  guinea's hips spred? She
is 8 weeks old, due within the next 2 weeks, pregnant with 3-4 babies.

Answer
Hi,

Although there is nothing wrong with breeding a himalayan with a white crested piggy, sometimes you may get some genetic defects with inbreeding a brother and sister.  A few of these genetic defects include, but are not limited to, weak immune systems, the tendency to run in circles (a mental problem), crooked feeet, maloccluded teeth (must be filed by a vet frequently), and cataracts.

It also seems that she is about a month too young to carry babies, as the prime age for a first litter is about 3 or for months.  However, separation of her hips should not be a problem, and it is not necessary to measure them.

Since she is already about to have babies, do not let this information bother you until you are sure that there is something wrong, because inbred guinea pigs can turn out to be perfectly fine, as can young mothers.  My advice to you is to find a reliable vet who is experienced with guinea pigs and have him check up on the mother and her litter after delivery - or, if possible, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have him there while she is giving birth to make sure the babies aren't too big to squeeze out of her small body.

Until then, make sure she has the healthiest pregnancy possible.  This includes letting her have plenty of excercise, love, and nutrients.  Also, I would suggest picking up vitamin supplement drops at your local pet store to put in her food and water daily.

Thank you for your question, I hope I was of some help to you.  If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pigs (=
