hair loss and scratching

Question
I took my guinea pig to the vet recently and they did a skin
scrape b/c my piggie is biting his back area and his hair is
coming out. They recommended an Advantage which was
applied twice for fleas/lice, that didn't work, then they gave me
like a soothing shampoo, that didn't work, and I'm still waiting
for the results of the test but is there anything I can do in
between to get him to stop biting? Plus he is housed with one
other guinea pig, but the second one shows no symptoms of
discomfort or itchiness. Should I move them to separate cages?
I'm afraid that they will get depressed if I move them apart!  :(

*worried*

Answer
Hi Justine

This is a difficult one because it all depends on what is causing the problem. It is probable that your pig needs some sort of medication to get rid of the problem. You might like to consider getting a second opinion as there are far too many vets out there that dont have experience dealing with exotic pets like guinea pigs.

Is it possible you can put a mesh barrier half way acrossd the cage so the two pigs are separated (which is probably a good idea) but yet can still communicate? Just a thought.

Good luck
