Question
my guinea pig was very clean when i got her now she is got loss of hair patches..on her could she be pregnant...she is getting bigger how could i tell if she is pregnant..

Answer
Hi Kacey,

Pregnancy can sometimes cause slight hair loss on the sides of the abdomen, but I think parasites may be a more likely cause.  Take your guinea pig to a veterinarian who is experienced in the area of guinea pigs.  Ivermectin is used to treat mites, if the vet feels that mites are the cause.  Here is a helpful site on parasites to give you more information, pictures, and info on ivermectin:

Other causes of hair loss include boredom, dry skin, and vitamin deficiency.  To rule out any of these possibilities, see if the hair loss persists after:

- giving your guinea pig daily hay, attention, a brown paper bag to play in, and time to run around (cures for boredom)

- giving your piggie daily lettuce and carrots, as well as additions of vitamin supplemental droplets that can be found at any local pet store (cures for vitamin deficiency)

- gently applying Vaseline to the patches affected by hair loss (i have found that this helps dry skin)

If she is pregnant, her sides will continue to swell and her appetite will increase.  You may also find that she does not wish to be held as often.  Company during pregnancy is a great thing, but be sure that she is not being affected by mites before giving her a companion to keep her company during her pregnancy.

Thank you for your question, I hope I have been of some help to you.  If you have any further questions, whether about hair loss or tips on ensuring the healthiest pregnancy possible, please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pig (=
