Taming Guinea Pigs

Question
Hi,
I have two young (6-8 weeks old)female Guinea Pigs.  I have tried everything in the books to tame them and get them used to being picked up.  Hand feeding, giving them treats only when they are in my lap, etc.  They seem to be content once they are in my lap its just getting them there that is the problem.  They run around their cage frantically and it is hard to get ahold of them.  What do you suggest I do to tame them?  Also, on average how long does it take to tame a guinea pig?  Thanks so much!

**If anyone reading this has advice for me I would love to hear it.

Answer
Hi Claire

Baby Guinea Pigs are always skittish and they can be very hard to tame

I have found that constant handling is best and in no this can be very frustrating and i find it annoying but it is what come with the job of looking after them

When you put in your hand to get them slow it down get them into the corner and slowly put your hand to grab them
If they run away, just try again

Before picking them up give them a pat and always talk slowly and not to loud

If you let them no that when you come into there cage, you are not going to hurt them then they should stop the skittish behavour soon

All guinea Pigs are different but for babies the average time it takes for them to be tames is a couple of months but it also could be a couple of weeks if you do this often

Good Luck
