Question
Hello, :)
i have two male guinea pigs, both 5 months old and today after cleaning their cage i noticed a couple of patches of very light pink urine staining the sawdust. some of the patches are normal, some are the light pink. the colour is very pale and almost unnoticable and as the piggies are in my room i watch them often, they make no noises of discomfort when peeing. i havnt been feeding them beetroot and i dont think its stain from the newspaper. Any idea what it could be or what i should do?

Answer
by the sounds of it if there is a problem with the urine then it is just one of the guinea pigs, my advice would be to place kitchen role on the top of their floor rather than shaving for one or two nights, this will show up any red pee.

if however the urine turns out to be more of an orange tinge then dont worry about it, like us the colour of their urine intensify's the less water we drink.

this was extracted from exoticpetvet which is a pretty decent website on guinea pigs

Bloody urine may appear red or brown. This may indicate infection of the bladder or kidneys, bladder stones or problems with the clotting ability of the blood.  If your pig is female, it can indicate a problem with the uterus.  Other reasons for abnormal color of the urine include muscle damage, diet, and concentration of the urine i.e. very dilute urine is clear where as very concentrated urine is dark yellow to orange in color. These changes may be normal or may indicate other disease is present. Normal urine is thick and white to yellow in color.

If it is an infection then it is easy to teat with baytril, but if the guinea pig has one of the other problems then it is much more serious and so he'd need to see a vet.

best of luck
