Gerbil very sick please help fast

My pet gerbil who I  have had for 4 years is very sick he does not move very much and his eyes are not open and he is too weak to drink or eat. We have been holding the water for him but he wont drink much. What should I do,   Allyson

Hello, I must say your gerbil is very old. You've kept him a really long time. It sounds like he is having an eye infection and his body is just too weak to fight anything anymore. Even if you take him to a vet there is nothing they could do and they would probably put him to sleep. Just keep him warm and know that you have done everything you can do for him and you gave him 4 long happy years. Gerbils generally live 2-3 years on average and 4 years is really lucky for a gerbil. I'm very happy that you are worried about him, but I'm sorry to say there's not much you can do but make him comfortable. I feel bad to give you bad news and not an answer that you want to really hear, but it's the best answer I can give you.
