Hamster in labor (fairly urgent)

Question
My hamster seems to have been in labor for an entire day...she is bleeding slightly, and if she sits in one spot for too long she leaves spots of blood all over the bedding. She's definately pregnant, and I took the male out because I thought he might be disturbing her, but it didn't seem to help. This isn't her first litter, but it is her first with me, so I really don't know what to do, or if being in labor for so long is normal. Help, please?

Answer
Hi Izzy,

i know it is different for every hamster - but this does not sound normal to me!

My hamsters have usually finished having all of their babies within 24 hours of going into labour.

When any of my females have had babies they never seem to leave any blood anywhere - maybe tiny spots sometimes but this always gets cleaned up.

I would either ring a vet and see if he / she can come out to you urgently or if not you should take her to the vets straight away.

Try to do it so it disturbs her the least possible though.

Please do it as soon as possible - you could end up losing her and the babies!

Please let me know how you get on.

Good Luck,

Kind Regards,

Tammy
