Question
Hello! I have another question. I go to my Nana's for about a week in the summer, and I was wondering if it was possible to take my hamster with me when I get it. It's about a 4-5 hour trip from my house. Would they be alright? Also, how do you keep your hamster cool in the summer time? Thanks for the help!                          Melissa

Answer
Hi Melissa,

Hamsters are fine to travel as long as they are in a specially designed hamster carrier with plenty of air holes and good air circulation.

All that needs to be in the box is a thick layer of saw dust or shavings with plenty of bedding.  Make sure there are no toys or wheels in the box which can fall and hurt the hamster.

Put some food in there for him too.

He also needs some kind of moisture for the journey but it is best not to use a water bottle or dish because it could spill or fall on the hamster - instead, make sure you put in a piece of fresh vegetable - preferebly one which has a high water content - cucumber is good or carrot too.

You need to take his cage for him to live in for the week but it is not a good idea for him to travel in it.

If temperatures get too high for your hamster then you can keep in a cool room or even a basement as long as it isnt too cold!  You can even use a fan in the room as long as it is not blowing directly on the hamster.

In high temperatures you must always remember to replace the water if it gets hot - hamsters need a cool, fresh supply of water at all times.
