Question
Hi Karen!  My hamster gave birth to 13 wonderful pups... However one of them was cannibalized by her littermates at about 2 weeks old... and so now I'm down to 12 pups.  One of them, a little boy, is now three weeks and three days old.  When I arrived home this evening, it was not moving in the cage.  He feels a little colder than normal, and will not move at all.  His breathing is very irregular and is only a deep breath a couple of times per minute.  His eyes are open, and he blinks from time to time.  Also, when I use a dropper to try and give him some water, he spits some of it out, so he then moves a teeny bit.  I tried giving him to mom to handle, and she picked him up and paraded him around the cage before just dropping him down next to the nest.  I'm really scared and I don't know what to do.  None of the vet clinics in my area that see exotic pets are open on Sunday, and I'd hate to bury another little baby.  My first thought was wet tail, but I don't see how that would make him immobilized.  Any help you could give (even a phone number I could call) would be GREATLY appreciated!!!  Thank you SO much.

Answer
Hi Anna,

If he is having loose stools, it very well could be wet tail, if he isn't, it could be a type of parasite. Wet tail can make a hamster immobile because they get so dehydrated and weak. It would also be best to put him a a cage by himself, just to be safe, as wet tail is very contagious.
Keep offering him water, at least a drop or two every hour ( it is important to keep him hydrated) and offer him small pieces of burnt toast and dry grains (no fruits or vegetables).
The cage he is in now should be disinfected with diluted bleach ( 3 cups hot water to one cup bleach) along with the wheel, food dishes, water bowls and any washable toys. Toys that can not be washed should be thrown away.
If the baby makes it through to Monday (and I am hoping he does) and is still in this condition, then he should be seen by the vet as soon as possible.
If you have anymore questions, please write again.

Thank you for writing and I am hoping for the best!
