Fleas on Hamster

Question
I, really don't know if my hamster has fleas, but I have noticed that on his fur and skin, he has some tiny clear looking bugs. They don't jump, so I am guessing that they are not fleas, but what I have noticed, is that when they suck on his skin, they turn red. Do you have any idea of what this could be?

Answer
Hello, it sounds like he either has lice or mites. Without me seeing a photo of the parasite up close I can not give a definite ID. Since most mites are brown and lice are usually white to almost clear I am going to lean towards them being lice. Do you have any other pets in the house?? Lice and mites can be passed from pet to pet. The best thing to do is to isolate your hamster from any other animals in the house. Then take your hamster to a vet for proper treatment as anything you can find in a store may or may not work. Be sure to ask him ways to prevent it from coming back as well as what to do during the infestation. My advice is to constantly clean that cage and follow doctors orders. I don't know of anything on the market right now for lice in hamsters. So the best thing to do is take your hammie to a vet. Good luck and keep me posted.
