-----Question-----
I got a gerbil for Christmas and i did not know anything about them and my mom looked on line and found that I needed two in the same cage so I got another one and I don't know how old they are and they keep fighting so i have them in separate cages and I've been switch them from one cage to another so they can get use to each others scent .I've been doing this for a month and i put them back in the same cage today and the smelled each other for a  minute and just rolled into a ball slowly and started fighting again. I know this is long but I don't know what to do, Please help!

Hi Leah,

Because you didn't get them at the same time, from the same cage they haven't excepted each other. The normal rule is to buy two together at the same time!! You are right in now doing what you are with the separator, and i would keep going with this. You must remember though that there is never any guarantee they will get on, and so they may have to live seperate. I would keep perserving for another month just to be sure. You can get them both out and put them somewhere together that doesn't smell of them, such as a bathtub, so that then they aren't fighting for territory. You could try this once/twice a day as well. There will be a little fighting to sort out dominance, but if thye do roll in a ball, and go mad then you must separate them!!

Hope this helps,

Answer
Hello,

If they curl into a ball and fight i would separate them as this is more serious fighting!!
You may see them stand on their hind legs and 'box' with each other, this is ok as long as fluff doesn't start flying!!! They will probably also try and chase each other around to!

Hope this helps,
Charlie
