Gerbils are best housed in a ventilated glass tank to stop this behavior.
You cannot stop a gerbil from chewing plastic. This behavior is so common in gerbils. She will eventually escape.

In her tank she should be given apple wood or wood gnaws from the pet shop to chew as they are an animal that needs to chew to keep its teeth from over growing.
She should also be given a 3 inch deep base bedding mixture of peat and wood shavings so she can happily make tunnels. This is fun to watch and good mental stimulation for the gerbil, as it is natural behavior
