dwarf hampsters and them having babies

Question
Hello,
I have a 8 month old dwarf hampster and we just got a 6 week old dwarf hampster. To our surprise the 8 month old "princess"turned out to be a "prince" because our new one is a girl and we caught them mating today. So... Two questions, first is it bad that she is probably going to be pregnant so young? And do you know how long they are usually pregnant for so we can know when to expect the babies?

Answer
Hi Danielle,

Yes it can be bad being she is so young. It is important not to breed the female too early because it will often result in the mother either giving birth to unhealthy babies which will be destroyed, her abandoning the litter, or her destroying the litter out of frustration. This happens because the mother is just too young to cope mentally with the raising of the litter. Another reason for waiting a while before breeding your females is to let them reach there adult size, they will probably produce more average weight babies that way.
If your hamster is pregnant, she will generally become fat within 2 days and she will deliver 16 to 18 days from the day they were mated.
