Question
My female hamster just gave birth to 6 babies last month. The female hamster is very healthy and she has never got wet tail before. But one of the babies are smaller then usual and it eats alot. I found out that the smaller baby is have diarrhea and the hair is messy too. I think that it is wet tail. All the other hamsters are healthy living, only that little small hamster has the symptoms. I have seperated them and I hope you will tell me what to do.

Answer
Hello Wei Qi,
you do need to keep the baby away from the others as wettail is contagious. It's common for babies to get wettail when they are being weaned off their mom. It's a stressful period in their life. The best thing to do is to take the hamster to a vet for antibiotics. That's really the best way to go. The second option is to buy dritail medication at a pet store but it only works half of the time. You can also buy Acidophilus+ after the wettail has been cured and give that as a way of helping the digestive system produce beneficial bacteria. The thing is the vet is the best way to go since dritail may or may not work.
