Question
Hi Sheila,
Is it ok to feed my hamster small pieces of unseasoned chicken or ground beef?

Answer
Hi Sharon

In the wild hamsters would have a diet of small insects, meal worms and seeds.  Therefore in captivity you can feed them some meat products.  I've never actually done this - because I'm vegetarian so I don't have meat in the house, but I do know that you can definitely give hamsters chicken, fish and lamb - but only in very small quantities, perhaps once a week.  I'm not sure about beef - I've not heard of anyone giving them this before, but that doesn't mean you can't. Maybe someone else on this website has had experience of feeding hamsters beef, who could advise on this.
