Dear Tammy Buckland,yesterday my hamster gave birth to three little hamsters.Today all of them got eaten by the mother!Why?

I am very sorry to here about your loss.

There are a number of reasons why this can happen.

Firstly the mother could have been too young to take on the responsibility of rearing a litter of babies, this can be quite common.

The parents and babies should not be disturbed for at least two weeks after being born, if they are then the mother does sometimes kill the babies - or maybe you could have another pet in the room which could have frightened the mother?

Sometimes there is something wrong with the babies which is not apparent to a person, but the mother will know and may get rid of them as they would probably die anyway.
