hamster mites

hello, i have just noticed that my panda hamster has little bugs crawling in his
fur.  what can i do??  will they be harmful to me and my son?

Hi Terri

The best thing would be to get him checked by a vet.  There is a drug called Ivermec, a drop of which is applied externally to the neck and the dosage is usually repeated a few weeks later. This will kill any mites and the next generation of mites.  If it is some other kind of infestation, then your vet should be able to identify them and determine what medication you need.
