Dear Gina,
thank you for your question.
Russian dwarf hamsters do live as breeding pairs in the wild, but in captivity they are best kept alone unless you want to breed. Even breeding pairs may start to fight and pairs or groups of the same sex start fighting sooner or later, often hurting or even killing each other. This is because the hamsters normally don't live with other males/females and because they don't really have room to avoid each other even in big cages.
I recommend separating the hamsters now before the fighting gets any worse. I also suggest that your female shouldn't have any more babies or she might die from the stress alone. They shouldn't have more than four litters in their whole live and normally at least two months must lie between the weaning of the last litter and the next mating.
I hope I was of some help to you

Answer
Rubbermaid containers can be used to house hamsters. They are actually a good option, since they are comparatively cheap and you can get a pretty big container for a lot less money than a big cage. It's also great for filling in bedding very high. The container mustn't be higher than wide to ensure proper ventilation and your friend will need a lid (mesh wire, not the lid that comes with the container).
I hope this helps
