Question
Hi Renee.. I have two Beagles and right before I was going to take them to get fixed she got pregnant by my male. She is about a week away from giving birth.  My question is should I have my male moved away from her during her this last week to give her privacy?  Or to keep the puppies safe? I have never been around whelping dogs but have seen it on television and I always notice the males aren't around.

Answer
Hi Odette. It's best to keep the male away when she starts to whelp. Most new mom's won't want the dad around, or any other dogs for that matter. She may get really testy with him. It's safest for all concerned that he be kept away. Good luck! P.S. You don't have to keep him away yet. if she's comfortable with him around for now, then that's fine. When she goes into labor, seperate them.
