trying to breed-trouble hitting the target

Question
Hi Renee,

Tried to breed my 3 yo toy poodle today, he is longer legged than the female, both are very eager but have never bred before, he mounts & immediately starts banging up against her & is miles from the target.  He ended up ejaculating and then swelling up as if he was tied in, but wasn't.  The female is close to 2 yo, she never really bled this cycle, but she is flagging her tail and is definitely receptive.  Any advice appreciated.

Answer
Hi Sue. If they will let you, sit next to them while they are trying to breed, then put your hand gently on the male's sheath and try to guide him into place. Some dogs won't let you do this, they'll just quit. If he won't, put your hand under the female's belly and guide her to the right spot. Since the boy is taller than she is, you can also try putting her on a thick book covered by a towel or blanket, so if that helps. This is about all you can do without resorting to A.I. Good luck!
