working dogs

I'm doing a research project for school. Can you tell me which breeds are best for police work and why? I also what type of dogs make the best dogs for handicap helpers?

Answer
Police usually lean toward German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and labradors. Just not any dog will do. They are looking for a dog that most would consider "hyper". They must have a strong drive for work and be very intense at it. Most of the dogs they chose would not make a good family pet. They need constant stimulation.
As far as working with the handicapped they look for a more gentle, even natured dog. Golden retrievers rank high for this kind of work.
