My Pom is having diarrhea

Question
Thanks for the quick reply to my questions. I have had the puppy for about 2 weeks. She has not been around other larger dogs and she has had her first set of puppy shows and been wormed. I had her checked by the vet the day I received her and he gave her a clean bill of health and said she didn't have worms. The breeder was feeding the puppies Eukanuba dry mixed with a commerical can food. I prefer to feed just a good quality dry food. I know that can foods can cause loose stools but she's been without that for well over a week.

Thanks

Answer
I'm sorry to hear that your puppy still is having diarrhea

I forget what I told you in my last message (I get quite a few) have you tried treating your puppy by withholding food for 12 to 24 hours followed by a bland diet? Do not withhold water- only food.
The bland diet is:

Mix one and a half cups of cooked white rice or potato(skinless) with one half cup of cottage cheese. Remove the liquid from cottage cheese by squeezing it between several layers of paper towel. Instead of cottage cheese, you could substitute with a jar of chicken or turkey baby food. Feed this bland diet several times a day in small doses for at least a 3-4 days and see if the diarrhea clears up. After 3 or 4 days if the dog appears to be getting better, S-L-O-W-L-Y (over a period of another 3-4 days) begin mixing in it's regular food, until she's back to her regular food.

If you've already tried withholding food, followed by a bland diet and diarrhea has continued to be a problem, then you have no choice but to take your puppy back to the doctor.

Many things can cause diarrhea besides intestinal parasites, viral and bacterial infections, changes in diet, overeating, eating some human foods, medications and stress are just a few things that can cause diarrhea.

You might not have to actually bring the dog to the vet, sometimes all they require is a fresh stool sample to be dropped off.

At the very least, you should talk to your vet and ask for specific advice on what kind of first aid you can administer safely at home. Make sure you tell the vet if you've already tried withholding food followed by the bland diet.

In an older dog with acute diarrhea there are some things that you can do at home that may be helpful. But with a young puppy some diarrhea conditions can be life threatening if left untreated. That is why I suggest you treat diarrhea as an emergency when symptoms persist (or worsen).

Best of luck,

Patti
