dog likes cat food not his own

Question
Hi I know it's not good for dogs to eat cat food or vise versa. I put the oil or a little canned food (sometimes a small amount of dry food in with his dog food to keep him away from the cats meals. Is this potentially harmful to my dog?

Answer
Hi Carrie,

Thank you for writing to me.  The best way to keep the dog out of the cat food is to feed the cat on an elevated surface, such as a counter top.  That way the dog will not have a chance to partake in the cat's food.

That being said, perhaps there is something in the food that your dog needs, nutritionally speaking.  Are you giving your dog a vitamin/mineral supplement?  Many kibbles are lacking in all the necessary nutrition.  Be sure you feed your dog a high quality, human grade food.  The following link will give you some insight into some of those foods:

I also recommend including Missing Link and Prozyme in a dog's food bowl as well as fish oil (Nordic Naturals).  You want to make sure that your dog receives all the nutrition that will help prevent illness later in life.

Best of luck,
