Question
Hi we have a 3 year old Rottweiler and we are always cleaning the sleepers
out of her eyes.  They are mucus like.  this happens a couple times a day.
Any ideas what we can do?  Thanks,  Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

As you know, that crusty or mucus discharge your dog gets in her eyes after sleeping is normal. That discharge actually is from the eye's natural self-cleaning efforts.

You didn't describe the discharge that you've been cleaning from your dog's eyes. The discharge is probably normal if it's darkish brown, and a small to moderate amount, but if it is green or yellow in color, an eye infection is indicated and veterinary care is required.

With a dog as large as a Rottweiler, I don't think it is too odd to have to clear his eyes a couple of times a day.

Basically, if your dog has been having a watery or discolored discharge from the eyes for 48 hours or more it's time to schedule an appointment with your vet.

Your vet may give you eye drops or an ointment to treat your dog's eyes.

I hope I've been a help. Best of luck,

Patti
