Acid Reflux

Question
I obtained my terrier/poodle mix from the SPCA last year. Toby is 1 year and 9 months of age. Ever since I got him, he seems as though he has a little something coming back up through his throat. Nothing comes out or anything. So I am wondering, can dogs have acid reflux? Also, since the day I got him he does not eat very much and is very picky. He will eat white chicken meat (boiled) and some vegetables but that is about it. The acid reflux (if that is what it is) started the day I got him.

Answer
Dear Cindy

Thank you for your question.

I am not sure whether dogs can suffer from acid reflux.  Does he do this after he has eaten?  If so, I would recommend that you moisten your dogs diet, feed at least 2 meals a day, and raise your dog meal off the floor.

A lot of dogs suffer from ingestion after eating their meal from the floor level.  This is because as a dog gulps their food, they ingest air at the same time.  This air moves into the digestion system and causes ingestion.  By raising the food off the floor (raised feeder or ergonomic feeder), you bring your dogs diet up to shoulder level and minimise the amount of air ingested.

I hope I have helped

Kind Regards
