Question
My 13 y.o. cocker spaniel has been acting lethargic the last 2 days. She takes arthritis medication twice daily. For the last 4 months we have been struggling with intermittent diarrhea. We have seen a vet for this and now mix prescription ID with her dry potato and rice prescription food (she also has food allergies). Yesterday morning I gave her arthritis medicine... @ 3 hours later she vomited. She vomited 5 times in a 6 hour period and had very bad diarrhea. I called a vet earlier in the afternoon who recommended that I stop feeding her and giving her water. She became very lethargic throughout the day. Finally, I realized that she would not take her arthritis medication... she had no interest in food or water. She spent the majority of the day outside (she's an in-house dog). The last straw was when she tried going to the bathroom she fell over on her side. I brought her to the ER.
X-rays were taken, lungs and heart appeared normal. However, large liver and kidney. They gave her injection of pepcid and reglan for her stomach pain. I really wanted to try and wait till Monday so I can take her to the regular vet. However today, she is really dizzy, will not drink water or eat food, and she will not eat or take her medication.
My question: What can you suggest to entice her appetite and keep her hydrated till tomorrow morning?

Answer
Hi Angela,

For hydration, you can try giving your dog frequent opportunities to sip Pedialyte, or warm low sodium/low fat Chicken broth. It's actually more important that your dog drink, than eat. Dehydration is a slippery slope that can lead to organ failure.  That said, many times a scrambled or hard boiled egg might entice her into eating. You can also try a little Cream of Wheat, it's bland enough to stay down in most cases.

If your dog continues to act dizzy, and won't drink then you shouldn't put off going to the vet today, even though it's not your regular doctor.

Best of luck,
Patti
