QuestionBecky --
I am interested in purchasing a dog for pet purposes only. I would like to go to the pound/humane society for a dog, but I don't know what to look for. Now, I know about choosing a healthy dog, but I want to know how to select a mixed breed with the characteristics I want, especially since I'm not going to get a whole lot of time to judge the dog at the pound before I take it home. What I'm looking for is a medium size dog (about the size of a standard schnauzer) with an independent personality, but that doesn't get bored easily (I can sometimes be away from home for 10 hours or so at a stretch. I would have someone walk him, but I don't want him tearing up my upholstery while I'm out.) I would also like a more sedentary dog, so I've been leaning toward an older animal.
What do you think? What are some breeds to avoid or look for? Should I get a male or a female? Neutering is definitely going to happen, no matter what. I think an older dog would be a good choice, but other than that, what traits should I look for?
Hope you can help!

AnswerHI Lorena,
Your best bet would be to go to the AKC website and check out the different breeds, if you are wanting a purbred. There are too many to go into here. I would avoid the "working" class as they need more activity... such as the border collie who would go beserk without activity.
Why don't you consider a mixed breed?
An older dog would be better if you are wanting one that is not going to tear everything up, but that still won't guarantee anything. Crate training is a good alternative as long as you have someone walk him/her as you said. Also,I personally prfer females as males tend to hike their legs on furniture to "mark" it.
Good luck and God bless,
Becky
