Question
Does anyone know when is the best age to breed a red setter, we have two the male is 9months old and we have just got a female 3 weeks ago who is two and a half years old, the male has already got to the female last night - does this mean the pups will have problems? help i am very worried.they are both full bred. Thankyou

Answer
The dogs shouldn't be bred until they have cleared all their health checks. They need to be X-rayed for hip dysplasia at the age of two (although the youngster could have a preliminary one done now) and have their thyroids tested, two fairly common problems in Irish Setters. Irish Setters can have a few other health issues, but those aren't as common. Without these tests, yes, the puppies could have problems. http://irishsetterhealth.org/index.htm
