Question
Hello,

I have a 3 year old dog named Maggie, she is a mixed breed, predominantly siberian huskey with some lab and chinese sharpei. Lately, she has had crusty brown eye and nose discharge and I'm wondering what this could be. I'm thinking it might be allergies since she also licks her paws a lot and likes to scratch. Otherwise, she is in good spirits as usual. I have narrowed it down to the fact that I don't think it is anything contagous because I have four other dogs who are completely healthy and show no similar signs in the last week she has had this going on. I clean her eyes and nose and I have been giving her 50mg of benadryl per day, but it doesn't seem to do much and she seems to be worse outside. Do you think it is likely allergies.....any other possibilities? And if so what do you think might help her? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Answer
Sounds alot like allergies. More then likely outdoor allergies, but you could try a different diet to be sure its not a food allergy.  Usually a lamb dog food works well for food allergy dogs. Make sure it is of high quality (first ingredient should be lamb, not corn). Benadryl should help, I am not sure of the dosage, but follow the box for a child of Maggie's weight.  It doesnt sound as if she is suffering too much from it, you say she is in good spirits. Most allergy sufferers don't get complete relief. Good Luck to you.
