Question
I have a 4 year old terrier and she has been spayed. It was pointed out to me by my daughter that Tootsies belly was red and her nipples are swollen. I am not sure what is going on or what to do for her. If you can offer any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Dee,

If the dog was spayed before her first birthday - and especially before her first heat, it really limits what would cause her to have swollen nipples. If I were to take a guess here, it would be that this is some sort of allergy issue. Red, inflammed skin is a hallmark sign of some sort of allergic reaction. It may be that a reaction on her underside irritated her nipples. My advice to you is to have her examined and diagnosed by a veterinarian as soon as possible so the condition can be treated... it can't be comfortable for Tootsies. Sorry I can't help you more online, but in a situation like this nothing but a visit to the veterinarian will be able to tell you what's going on.

Good luck!
