Car Chasing

Question
How do I get my dog to ignore vehicles? My 2 yr old black lab mix is very energetic and is a good walker for the most part, but he lunges after passing cars so strongly I can barely hold him back! I have tried pulling on the leash and saying no - have used harness, halter, and even choke chain. He doesn't seem to respond to any of them. If he ever managed to get loose, I'm afraid he would end up getting hit. Please offer any suggestions you might have!

Answer
When you said halter, did you mean the Haltie Head Collar?  Usually they and the other brands Gentle Leader and Promise are the answer to even the most recalcitrant puller.  If that was not what you meant, I would suggest picking up one and trying it.  Unlike the choke collar, never jerk on it, a steady pull turns the dog's head around and they ease off.

I hate to even mention the prong collar.  It is essential somebody that knows what they are doing, fits it to your dog and shows you the proper usage.  Misused, it can puncture the dog's aorta.  Properly used, it is as safe or safer than other collars, and highly effective.  If you take an obedience course, usually the instructor can help with one.  Make sure the obedience course is about you learning to be top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
