Mixed breed breeding...

Question
In the world of "designer dog" breeding...once a "mixed" puppy is produced...can this dog eventually be bred with the same mixed breed for puppies?  Or must the two original breeds be bred again?  I.E.  If a person were to breed two "teddy bear" puppies....what would be the outcome?  Health issues, a dilution of the breed?  etc.?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Sandi,

In this age of designer dogs, we have people inventing and re-inventing different types of dogs.   The teddybear pup is an AKC  shih tzu and a AKC bichon frise.  I have put out a question to a breeder about whether they are breeding two teddybears together to perpetuate a new breed or are they just doing the original breeding over and over.  There are other new breeds for example Ki leo's.  This is a rare breed that was orginally formed by breeding a shih tzu and a maltese then the next generation had something else thrown in.  These pups were bred with each other and we have the Ki Leo.  The Ki Leo is very similar to the teddybear, by the way, and has a wonderful disposition.

As you know the labradoodle is a standard poodle and a labrador.   They do, however breed two labradoodles together to get more labradoodles.  soooooooo I guess we can say that it is up to the breeder.  The problem with having a new breed like this is that there are no regulations or standards that are followed.    This is why the AKC came into existance and why they only take a few new breeds per year  which have to be in existence for many generations before they qualify.

My email is nanricfoxes@bellsouth.net.  If you email me I will send you any answer I get from the teddybear breeder.
