How to handle a velcro dog

Question
I have a 2 yr old female maltipoo.  Just brought home a 1.5 yr old male cockapoo, who is a velcro dog.  Because he sticks so close to me, he will not play with my female.  We got another dog because our female was lonely and needed a playmate.  How can I encourage him to play with her and how do I get him to give me some space?

Answer
Rehoming is traumatic to a dog.  He may have been in a home with no other dogs.  Indulge him with the attention he wants to reassure him.  Perhaps play some fetch with the 2 of them.  If he won't leave you to chase the ball, keep throwing it for her and give her plenty of attention every time she returns it.  After a while, he should join in.  As they compete for the ball, he should become comfortable with interacting with her.
