Question
My 7 month old puppy has just had a blood transfusion after eating rat poison. she is very weak and will not entertain any food and drinks very little. When she does drink she vomits yellow bile. The vet said to take her in tomorrow for glucose. I want to know her chances of a full recovery. I do not want to prolong her misery if at the end of the day she will die

Answer
Hi Sharon :-)

There is a 50% chance she will recover hun. She is a very young Dog and this it to her advantage because she will be able to clear her body of the toxins and have more strength to fight than a older Dog would.

Because she isn't eating, you're going to have to force feed her. It's a case of being cruel to be kind unfortunately.

To forcefeed her, put the food in her mouth....a small bit at a time, and keep doing this until she begins to eat on her own. She will understand this way that she needs to eat the food and she will try to eat it.

Also she MUST keep her fluid intake up. This will help flush out any toxins and stop her from becomming dehydrated.

You can do this in 2 ways. Both will (again) require forcing her but it wont hurt her.

1) Dip your finger in some water or milk and put this into her mouth or keep rubbing it along her Gums. Or alternatively, let her lick the water off your finger. It will take some time but she will drink it eventually.

2) Purchase a dropper from your Pharamcist. The dropper will have a squeazy end and you fill it will water, then put it into her mouth or the side of her mouth and squeeze the end and this will release the fluid in the dropper into her mouth. Keep doing this and she will drink it.

If you notice any change in her at all or anything that worries you, then contact your Vet immediately.

Take care & all the best & I hope she is better soon. Please leave me a comment.
