dog rash

Question
My Bassett Hound is just over 1 year.  She woke up this morning with a swollen face.  I gave her some benadryl and now this evening she is not swollen anymore but has a rash all over her body.  I don't see any missing hair but her head has bumps and her underbelly is red with the rash. What should I do since I can not get to a vet for a couple of days?

Answer
If her face was swollen and she has hives it definitely sounds like an allergic reaction.  If you can't get her to the vet yet then I would keep giving her the benadryl.  Generally speaking Benadryl is about 1 mg per pound, and benadryl comes in 25 mg tablets, so if she is about 50 pounds you can give her two tablets.  In case she got into something that is on her skin I would also give her a bath.  Keep an eye on her to make sure she is not developing any breathing problems, nor scratching herself so bad she injures herself.  Then take her to the vet as soon as its possible.
