My Pug Junior

Question
I have a 5 year old pug named Junior. This afternoon I noticed that on the pad of his paw there is a pea sized white lump. I had noticed him having some trouble keeping up with his walk the other night. He seems fine on the grass and carpet. I left a message with his vet. I don't really have money to take him in. I guess I am wondering if there is anything that I can do at home.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Most traumatic injuries to footpads will heal within two to three weeks, with or without treatment. The white bump might be an abrasion that your dog has been licking, so trying to treat this at home might work, but you should be prepared to see your vet in a week or two if you don't see an improvement in your dog's condition, or if your dog continues to to show signs of pain while walking.

First clean your dog's foot pad with a mild soap, and warm water. Next flush the foot pad with hydrogen peroxide. Pat dry with a clean towel and apply an antibiotic ointment to keep the pad. Try to keep the foot pad clean (easier said than done!) A clean cotton sock can be both bootie and bandage if your dog will keep it on. Try securing it with adhesive tape (around the top of the sock, not on Junior's fur). Don't secure it too tightly around your his leg.

If you need to see a vet, but have financial concerns, try contacting your local animal shelter or Humane Association. Sometimes they know of reduced cost vet clinics in the area. You could also ask your regular vet if he/she will allow you to pay off your bill over time.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
