Question
we have a 20 month old pit bull mix.  he is not neutered (yet).  we just rescued a unknown aged, not neutered (puppy-10 months?) pit bull mix.  the problem is our 20 month old is "humping" the new puppy.  this has been a problem before at the park with other male dogs.  i know that this is a sign of dominace, but the question is what should we do about it to correct this problem.  it makes other dogs mad and the new puppy is starting to growl at him and i am afriad they will start fighting over this.

Answer
The sooner you get him neutered, the better.  It is no cure all, and takes a while before fully effective, but a big help.  Same for the new puppy.  If they are not obedience trained, get into a good program.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
