House training with a bell...

Question
I have a 5 month year old weimaraner, and am having difficulty house training
her.  I had a private trainer coming to the house for obedience training and
she is the one who introducted me to the bell method.  My puppy
understands that when we go outside she rings the bell, but she DOES NOT
understand to ring it when she has to go potty.  I have been trying this
method for a couple months now and now it is just getting frustrating.  Is
there something im missing? Is there a way for her to understand to ring it
when she has to go outside?

Answer
Don't ring the bell every time you take her outside. Ring it ONLY when you take her out to potty, and put a command with it to begin with. Ask her, "Do you need to go potty?" right when you get her to the door, and have her ring the bell. Take her out (on leash), and when she potties, praise her. Do NOT let her run around or play. If she starts that, take her back inside and keep her tethered to you or put her in her crate for a few minutes before trying it again.

I've never trained any of my dogs to ring a bell or anything when they need to go out. They let me know by going to the door, then coming and looking at me, then going back to the door, and coming back and looking at me, until I let them out. The only time I made a big deal about going outside was when I was taking them out to potty. Otherwise, I just let them out without a fuss.
