potty training a 2 year old dashund

Question
Hi, I have had this 2 year old dashund for a week.  She is crate trained, however it appears she is not completely potty trained.  She pees atleast twice a day in our house, and poops atleast once a day in our house.  I am not sure how to break her of this.  I have heard it is hard to potty train an adult dog than it is a puppy.  She is so close though!!  I'm just not sure what to do about the rest of the pottying done in the house! Can you help me?

Answer
This could be a leadership thing rather than housebreaking.  She may also be claiming the house as hers.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
