Question
Bare with me, this has subject has a history to it.  I have 2 pugs, a male (bud) and a female (molly).  Molly is the perfect pug, she has none of the breathing issues that come with pugs, she is a little overweight, but we are working on this by walking everyday.  For the most part she is healthy.  Bud on the other hand has issues.  Bud was a rescue pug.  I got him because my husbands aunt and uncle could no longer keep him because the aunt had leukemia.  As a puppy, bud was kept on a short leach and in his crate most of the time, because the aunt and uncle could not keep up with his energy.  By the time I inherited Bud, he was almost a year old.  He was very anxious and did not stop moving, I joked around that he was my hyperactive child.  You never saw him lay down or sit, it just didn't happen.  Bud was also moved around a lot after my husbands aunt found out she had leukemia (before we inherited him.)  Bud did not know what a "real and stable" home was.

About 6 months after we got him home, my husband and I went on a vacation.  We put both dogs in a kennel, in the same pen.  By the time our 10- day vacation was over and we'd picked up the dogs, Bud had scratched holes in his fur, exposing massive sores from scratching.  Took him to the vet and the vet said he had separation anxiety after seeing his sores and hearing the history.  The vet prescribed antibiotics and sent us home and did not give any suggestions on how to deal with his anxiety issues.

I've had bud for almost 3 years now, he is a wonderful loving little dog and the way he looks at me when we spend time together, you can just tell he adores his mama.

Now to the current issue at hand.  Last week, I had to move my pugs from the backyard to the sideyard because I was going to be killing some weeds and I didn't want them to get into the weed killer.  Because of this move, Bud was not able to look thru the sliding glass door and watch me thru out the evening.  He has been so stressed with his anxiety of not seeing me constantly that he has once again scratched a gaping hold in his fur and caused an infection on his skin.  I am cleaning it and he's on vet prescribed antibiotics and an ointment.

My question is.......How do I help him past his anxiety issues.  I have tried pretty much everything.  He can sense when I am going somewhere, even if it's to work. I really do love him and I want to know what as a dog parent I can do to help him thru these stressful times.  I am ready to get some type of doggy prozac if that would help.   I am on my last straw.  I am afraid that one day he's going to do something that I can't fix.  Please help.....

Answer
I think with a dog that is as bad as Bud,I think what you are going to have to do,is to find a trainer that deals with separation anxiety, and what they often do is video tape the dog while you are out of the house, then they watch the tape with you,and try to work on a solution for you-this is the best way to go,as a trainer can find something that will work with your dog

It is usually either behavioral modification, medication, such as prozac or in a lot of cases it's a bit of both-so call around and find a trainer that deals with this type of problem
