Question
A lady next to us had a puppy who had parvo and died. And about six months ago we got two golden lab chow mix puppies. But on monday 19 of june one of our puppies lost his appetite, threw up, had bloody diahria, and he foamed at the mouth. He also would not be happy as usuall. And the next day he died. So one day after we took the other puppy to the vet for shots and now he has lost appetite four days in a row and wont hardly drink, is tired all the time, and is not playfull anymore. He seems like he is depressed mabye but I dont know. What do you think is wrong with him? How do we make him eat? What do you think? Please help. Im afraid he will die.

Answer
Hi Hali,  I am sorry I was delayed in getting back to you, and am sorry to hear about your puppy.  I hope the other puppy is ok.  Vaccinations for parvo come in a killed form and a modified live form.  Most vets use a modified live form of the vaccine as it makes the immunity stronger by (in lay terms) giving the dog a mild dose of the virus to make the body form antibodies which will be stronger in warding off the disease than synthetic antibodies given in killed form.  The bad part about modified vaccines is that if you dog is exposed to the virus right after getting the vaccine (within a very short period of time in days) then the dog can pick up the virus and get very sick.  A lot of times they get sicker quicker if they get the disease because they got it from being vaccinated than if they picked up the disease on their own, because essentially you have given them a little dose of it in the vaccine.  It's not easy to explain in lay terms, but I hope you understand what I explained.  This is why they vaccinate 3 times, and start vaccinations at 6 weeks old, so the immunity from the mother will overlap the vaccine you give to double protect the pup in case it is exposed during the vaccination time.  I hope everything went well with the other puppy.
