We have a six year old female lab and we would like to get a german short hair pup. Wondering if a male or female would be a better fit?

Labs are usually frendly dogs, so I think there's no problem in adding a new puppy in your household; your lab should accept the new entry without any problems.
The sex of the puppy shouldn't be a big issue; just remember that, if your lab isn't spayed, you will have some troubles when your male german short hair gets older...
