urination problem

Question
My 11 year old female Keeshond has recently been urinating on our family couch. She is not allowed on the couch and we have never had a problem with her being on it before. We also haven't had any bathroom issues with her since she was a puppy and we were training her. We let her outside often so it is not an issue of having no where to go. We have had 2 instances of this just this week. She has been to the vet recently and nothing was wrong with her other than she was 5 lbs overweight. We have since put her on a diet and have been exercising regularly. I believe this to be a behavioral issue. What is causing this urination and how can I help my dog?

Answer
It is very strange for a dog to do that at 11 years old.  Can you think of any other changes to her routine other than the diet and exercise?  All I can suggest is better leadership.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
