my dog gets hicups all the time fast ones it scares me what causes them

Hiccups are more common in puppies than they are in older dogs.

They can be caused by the dog eating too fast and swallowing air. This can be solved by putting something like a tennis ball in his food dish so that he is forced to eat slower as he works around the tennis ball.

Hiccups can also be due to congenital problems with the esophagus or diaphram (like megaesophagus or hiatal hernia), distemper, migration of parasite larvae to the diaphragm, or an illness that has caused hypocalcemia or hypokalemia (such as pancreatitis or kidney disease). Your veterinarian would need to examine the dog to determine if one of these was the cause for the hiccups. If your dog had his puppy vaccinations and has been wormed, you can eliminate the distemper and the parasite migration.
