does rectal temps drop in false pregnancy

Question
I tried to breed my dog about 2 1/2 to 3 months ago. The dogs did mate, but I'm not sure if she is pregnant. Her teats are swollen and just tonight starting leaking milk. According to the web she has all the signs. Her rectal temp dropped also tonight to 99.7. I was wondering if the rectal temp also drops in a false pregnancy or is this the real thing. I have a vet appt. in 2 days.

Answer
Hi Jessica,

A dog's pregnancy lasts 63 days on average. If you think there's a chance your dog may have been mated as long as 3 months ago, that would mean your dog has been pregnant for 91 days. Even your estimate of two and a half months puts the pregnancy on the long side (76 days).

False pregnancy isn't uncommon in female dogs. It can include increased breast size, temperature drop, and even milk production. You should have your dog examined by your veterinarian to confirm a true pregnancy, or rule out a false one. False pregnancies usually resolve by their self, but some do not. They are easily treated with hormone therapy.

Best of luck,

Patti
