Sleeping aggression

Question
Hello Elaine,
My 11 month old weimaraner used to sleep with us. About a month ago he started sleeping in his crate all night. However, before settling in for the night he likes to be as close to us as possible(my lap actually). Thus, he will jump on the bed or couch, wherever I am. The problem is if he falls asleep and we accidentally touch him, he growls and tries to bite. Then, he walks away. He never showed this problem prior to sleeping in the crate. It started immediately after. I am afraid that one day he might actually bite me, or even worse one of my kids. Ay recommendations as to what I should do?

Answer
First, I would have him checked out by the vet to see if he is not feeling well. He removed himself from your bed correct?

Secondly, I wouldn't allow him to be up with you on the bed (or lay on your feet) until this is resolved.

Lastly, I would practice waking him up by calling his name, turning on the light and or stomping on the floor, praising him for not reacting aggressively.

Is his hearing OK?
